Become lawyer

Standards and criteria for lawyers

Individuals who will become lawyers shall completely fulfil the following standards and criteria

  • Being Lao national
  • Above 25 years of age
  • Being equipped with pure virtue, morality, ethics, fairness, integrity towards peoples and nation
  • High legal education and above
  • Have received justice or lawyer’s professional training
  • Completed lawyer’s professional internship
  • Have passed Bar exam
  • Never been dismissed from public sector or never been convicted by court with deprivation of liberty for intentional offences
  • No being civic servant, military or police personnel on duty
  • Being in Good health
Standards and criteria to become lawyers for aliens, foreign nationals and stateless persons

aliens, foreign nationals and stateless persons who wish to apply for the professions of lawyers, I addition to all standards and criteria as prescribed in article 9 from point 2 to 10 of law on lawyer, the following additional criteria shall be fulfilled :

  • To have received the permit for proper employment or have permanent residence in Lao PDR
  • Good Lao language proficiency and good knowledge about Lao culture and high education about Lao Laws and above
Justice or Lawyer professional training

Individual who received justice or lawyers professional training from the National Institute of Justice will receive certification from the Ministry of Justice

Weaving from Justice of Lawyers professional Training

The following individuals will be weaved from justice or lawyers’ professional trainings:

  • former judges, prosecutors with more than 10 years of experiences
  • Law professors, associate professors
  • Individuals with high law education and more than 10 years working in legal and justice sector
  • Teachers, professors with more than 10 years of teaching experience
Lawyers professional training

Individuals who completed justice or lawyer professional training from the National Institute of Justice shall undertake at least 6 months internship in lawyers’ profession.

With respect to individuals as prescribed in article 12 point 4 od  law on lawyer shall undertake at least 3 months  in lawyer professional internship.

The Lao Bar Association issues the certificates to those who completed lawyer professional internship.

Weaving for lawyer professional internship

Individuals who completed justice or lawyer professional training from the National Institute of Justice shall undertake at least 6 months internship in lawyers’ profession

With respect to individuals as prescribed in article 12 point 4 od this Law shall undertake at least 3 months  in lawyer professional internship.

The Lao Bar Association issues the certificates to those who completed lawyer professional internship.

Weaving for lawyer professional internship

Individuals as prescribed in article 12 point 1, 2 and 3 of  Law on lawyer are weaved from Lawyer professional internship.

The Bar Exam is regulated in a separate regulation

Appointment of lawyers

Before becoming lawyers, individuals shall be appointed by the Minister of Justice within 30 working days of from the date  the Lao Bar Association makes proposals.

Upon appointment, the lawyer shall register membership with the Bar Association to receive membership cards and pay membership fees as prescribed in the Bar Association bylaws.
